Afternoon Tea has a new menu
Theatre Royal Drury Lane, one of London’s most iconic theatre venues, has launched a brand-new menu for its Regency Afternoon Tea.
The latest menu features sweets and cakes by baker to the stars, Lily Vanilli, and introduces a new and wonderful array of classic savoury treats, including mini British pies, served by the talented chefs at Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
With over 350 years of history, Theatre Royal Drury Lane was restored to its former 1812 glory by Andrew and Madeleine Lloyd Webber. It reopened in 2021, recreated as an all-day destination and the only theatre in London to serve Afternoon Tea. Served in the beautifully restored Grand Saloon, a marble-lined Regency room with twinkling chandeliers and a fine art collection, this is the most extraordinary place in the heart of Covent Garden to enjoy a decadent Afternoon Tea.
The new savoury items on the menu include a bitesize English crumpet topped with Earl Grey infused cream cheese and John Ross Jnr smoked salmon; a savoury madeleine with whipped English feta and pickled heritage carrot; and seasonal mini pies in traditional British flavours. The mini pies – a highlight of the new menu – will change throughout the year, always keeping it seasonal and honouring classic British cuisine. The launch edition features a Coronation chicken pie with caramelised onion chutney, with options from chicken and mushroom to steak and ale to come at a future date.
Lily Vanilli’s sweet treats include delicious warm fruit scones, paired with jam and cream; a fluffy vanilla cake filled with passionfruit and buttercream, topped by a handmade chocolate cupid; a mini sticky toffee pudding filled with a custard centre, drizzled in salted caramel and topped with crunchy caramel popcorn; and a delicious strawberry ice cream sandwich layered with marshmallow, strawberry parfait, brown sugar biscuit and dark chocolate.
Lily Vanilli: “Keeping the spirit of the Theatre Royal and its history at the heart of the menu and design, we developed a fluffy vanilla cake filled with zingy passionfruit and topped with our signature golden cherub, a sticky toffee pudding, filled with custard and caramel, topped with light crunchy, crisp salted caramel popcorn and an ice cream sandwich for summer - layered with brown sugar biscuit, strawberry parfait, marshmallow and dark chocolate.”
The Regency Tea is served with a wide selection of Rare Tea Company teas on bespoke fine bone china designed by Kit and Willow Kemp. The Mythical Characterscollection celebrates the rich history of the theatre and is inspired by illustrations of costume designs created for ballets, pantomimes, comic operas and Edwardian musical comedies. For anyone who would like to take a piece of the magic home with them, each item is available to purchase from The Lane’s shop.
Theatre Royal Drury Lane is the perfect place to celebrate a special moment, whether it’s a birthday, graduation or just a get together with friends and family – and the Regency Afternoon Tea is a must if you’re a Bridgerton fan. Just in time for summer, you can also now enjoy cocktails and champagne on the Terrace, a wonderful rooftop space overlooking bustling Covent Garden
